Factory floor photos that look like capability, not clutter
A working factory looks impressive when you stand in it and disappointing when you photograph it. In person you get scale, noise, movement and the sense that something is being made. In the photo you get a flat wall of grey equipment with pallets in front, a cable run across the floor, three bins, a laminated sign and a bright window that has blown out one corner. The machine you meant to show is somewhere in the middle. The difference is not the camera. It is that your eye edits the scene continuously and a photograph does not, so the photograph has to be composed to do that editing for you.
Find depth, not a flat wall of equipment
The instinct on a factory floor is to stand back and photograph the equipment head on, which produces a flat frontal image where everything sits at the same distance and nothing leads the eye. Instead, look for a line: a row of machines, an aisle, a conveyor, a rack run. Stand at the end of it and shoot down it. Now you have near, middle and far, and the frame reads as a facility rather than a wall.
Depth also solves the scale problem. A single machine photographed head on has nothing to be compared against. The same machine as the nearest element in a receding line of identical machines instantly communicates that you have eight of them, which is often the real message a prospect needs.
Get low or get high, but avoid standing eye level in the middle of the aisle. Crouching slightly puts the floor out of the frame and makes the machinery dominate. A mezzanine or a walkway, where you can safely stand, gives you the overview that shows layout and flow. Both are more interesting than the default standing view, which is the one everybody already has.
Shoot on a genuinely tidy shift
Most factory photos fail before the camera comes out. The single highest-value preparation is picking your moment: a shift where the floor is actually in good order, or an hour after a planned tidy, rather than mid-afternoon on a busy Thursday when there is work in progress everywhere.
Walk the route the day before with your phone and take a rough frame at every position you intend to use. Then look at those frames on a screen, where you will notice the bin, the pallet of empty totes and the cable reel that your eye skipped over on the floor. Send the list to whoever runs the area and ask what can move. Most of it can, and moving it takes ten minutes.
There is a limit to how far to take this. A completely empty, sterile floor does not read as a working plant and prospects notice. Work in progress at the stations, material staged where it belongs, and people working are all good. The clutter to remove is the accumulated stuff that has no business being where it is: empty packaging, a broken pallet, the chair nobody sits on, the sign about last month's audit.

Use the building as structure
Industrial buildings have strong architecture that most photographers ignore because they are looking down at the machines. Roof trusses, high-bay light rows, crane rails and column grids all run in straight lines, and if you align yourself with them you get a frame with a spine. Standing so a light row runs down the centre of the frame above an aisle is one of the most reliable factory compositions there is.
Ceiling height is also your best free indicator of scale. Including the roof, and a column with a person or a machine at its base, tells a viewer the building is large in a way no wide angle across the floor ever manages. If you are trying to convey capacity, get the roof in.
Keep verticals vertical. Columns and machine frames that lean inward at the top are the clearest sign of an amateur factory photo, and they make the building look like it is collapsing. Hold the camera level rather than tilting up, and crop down afterwards, or correct the convergence in an edit.
Skylights, shadowed aisles and the contrast problem
The hardest technical problem in a factory is dynamic range. A roof light or an open shutter door can be many times brighter than a shadowed aisle twenty metres away. Expose for the aisle and the roof lights blow into a white hole; expose for the roof lights and the machinery becomes a silhouette.
The first fix is compositional: frame so the brightest sources are out of shot or behind you. Shooting away from the shutter door rather than toward it removes the problem entirely and costs nothing. Where you must include a bright window, put it at the edge of the frame rather than the centre, where it will draw the eye away from everything else.
The technical fixes come next. Shoot at a time of day when the sun is not directly on the roof lights. Switch the shop lights on even during the day so the shadowed areas are closer in brightness to the daylight coming in. If your camera or phone offers a high dynamic range mode, this is exactly the scene it exists for, though be aware it can produce a flat, over-processed look that needs pulling back in the edit.
Fixing the colour cast of high-bay lighting
Industrial lighting is rarely neutral. Older metal halide fittings go green as they age, high pressure sodium goes strongly orange, and cheap LED replacements often sit somewhere magenta. Under those lights a machine you know is a specific shade of blue photographs as something else entirely, and a customer who has seen your product in person notices immediately.
You also frequently have two or three sources at once: daylight through the roof lights, high bay overhead, and a task light at the station, all different colours. A single white balance setting cannot be right for all of them, which is why factory photos so often have a green machine under a blue window.
The practical approach is to set white balance off something you know is neutral. Put a plain grey or white card in the scene, take one frame with it, then remove it and shoot the rest. That single reference frame lets you or an editor correct the whole session confidently instead of guessing.

Photograph the areas that are working and be straightforward about what the images show. Staging an empty line to look busy is a claim you will have to defend on a site visit.
