A fabrication portfolio that shows what you can actually make
Most fabrication portfolios are a grid of grey objects in a grey shop. The work in them is often excellent, but a prospective customer scrolling the page cannot tell whether you are the shop that makes heavy structural steel or the shop that makes precision stainless enclosures, and cannot see the tolerance, the finish or the scale of anything. They move on and enquire elsewhere. Fixing this is mostly not a photography problem. It is a problem of organising the portfolio around what a buyer is trying to find out, and then shooting each piece so the one thing that makes it worth showing is actually visible.
Organise by capability, not by client
Portfolios usually get organised by job, in the order the jobs happened, because that is the order the photos arrived. A buyer does not care about your job sequence. They arrive with a specific question, usually some version of can you make this, in this material, at this size, to this tolerance, and they need to find the evidence in under a minute.
Reorganise around the question. Heavy structural. Sheet metal enclosures. Stainless food-grade fabrication. Pressure work. Machined and fabricated assemblies. Large weldments. Whatever your actual capability set is, name it in the buyer's language and put the work under it. The same job can appear under two headings if it demonstrates two things.
Then caption each piece with the specifics an estimator needs: material and grade, approximate size or weight, the process involved, the finish, and anything notable about the tolerance or the constraint. A photo with that caption does more selling than a photo with a client name, and it also avoids the confidentiality problem of naming customers you may not be free to name.
Shoot the assembly twice: in the shop and installed
The shop photo shows workmanship. Clean, well lit, against a plain background, the piece isolated so a viewer can see the welds, the edges and the finish. The installed photo shows that it works, that it fitted, and how big it actually is in a real building or on a real machine. Buyers need both, and portfolios almost always have only the first.
Getting the installed shot needs planning, because once a piece leaves your shop you have lost control of access. Ask at the point of order whether you may photograph the installation, agree it with the customer in writing, and ask your installers to take a set even if the quality is imperfect. A slightly rough site photograph of your fabrication in place is worth more than another clean shop photograph of the same object.
When you do get on site, shoot the piece in context first, with something recognisable for scale, then move in for the connection details that show how it interfaces with the rest of the structure. Check with the site about photography permission and confidentiality before you start, and stay inside their PPE and access rules like anyone else on that site.
Show the features that prove tolerance and process
An estimator judging whether you can do their work is looking for specific evidence: a machined face, a consistent weld cap, a tight radius on a formed edge, a bolt pattern with clean holes, a finished stainless surface with no heat tint. These are all close-up subjects, and they are almost always missing from portfolios that consist entirely of full-object shots.
For each significant piece, add two or three detail frames. Get close, keep the camera square to the feature, and light it across the surface rather than head on so the form shows. Where the point is dimensional, put a rule or a caliper in frame; where the point is surface finish, a raking light does the work.
Do not retouch these. A detail frame is a claim about your workmanship, and a customer will compare the delivered piece against it. Correcting exposure and colour so the detail is visible is entirely fine and often necessary in a dark shop. Smoothing a weld, cleaning up an edge or removing a mark in an editor turns a portfolio into a liability.
- A machined or ground face where flatness or finish matters
- A representative length of weld, lit across the bead
- A formed edge or radius showing the bend quality
- A hole pattern or mounting interface with a scale reference
- The finish: paint, galvanising, passivated stainless, powder coat
- Any feature that was genuinely difficult, with a caption saying why
Put a scale reference on everything large
A steel weldment photographed against a plain background could be 300 mm or 3 metres. Fabrication buyers care enormously about the difference, because it determines whether you have the handling, the bay height and the crane capacity for their work. Every large piece needs something in frame that gives its size away.
The best references are the ones that are already there: a person standing beside it, a standard pallet, a forklift, a shipping frame, a doorway. A person is the strongest because everyone reads human size instantly, and it has the side benefit of making the shop look like a working business rather than an empty building.
Where you cannot get a reference in the frame, state the dimensions in the caption and be consistent about it across the portfolio. What does not work is a page of frame-filling crops with no size information anywhere, which is what most fabrication portfolios currently are.
Making bare metal photograph as something other than grey
Raw steel, unpainted aluminium and mill-finish stainless all photograph as flat grey shapes under flat overhead shop lighting, because there is nothing in the light for the surface to reflect except a uniform grey ceiling. The metal is not the problem; the light is.
Give the surface something to reflect that varies. A large white card or a sheet of white polystyrene to one side, with the shop lights behind you, produces a gradient across the surface that reveals the form. Adding a dark card on the opposite side deepens the gradient and gives you an edge. This is the same principle used for photographing any reflective product, and on a large fabrication it just means bigger cards.
Angle matters as much as light. Rotate the piece, or move, until you find a position where the flat faces catch light differently from each other rather than all reflecting the same ceiling. On a weldment that usually means a three-quarter view with one face lit and one falling into shadow, which reads as three dimensional in a way a square-on view never does.

Can I show work I did for a client without naming them?
Usually yes for the object itself, but check your contracts, because some include confidentiality terms covering the work and its imagery, and some sectors are stricter than others. Captioning by material, size and process rather than by client name sidesteps most of the problem and is more useful to a prospective buyer anyway.
Is it worth photographing work in progress?
Yes, and it is under-used. A jig set up, a large assembly part-built, a fitter working on a joint, all show capability and capacity in a way a finished object does not. Make sure PPE is correct in any frame with a person, since a published photo showing missing protection is a problem regardless of how good the work is.
How do I photograph a piece that is too big for any clean background?
Shoot it in the shop and use the shop deliberately: a clear bay, a plain wall, the doorway light. Then clean up the remaining background clutter in an edit rather than trying to hang a backdrop behind a five-tonne weldment. Keep everything on the fabrication itself untouched, including any temporary lifting lugs, and say in the caption if they are not part of the finished piece.
Should the portfolio show painted or unpainted pieces?
Both, labelled. Buyers often need to know whether finishing is in-house, and a photo of the same assembly raw and then coated demonstrates that directly. Do not photograph a raw piece and imply a finish, and never change an apparent finish in an editor, because finish is part of what is being quoted.
