A great many jewellers shoot everything on white because a marketplace asked for a white lead image once, and then spend years wondering why their diamonds look like grey glass and their silver looks like pewter. The background is not decoration in jewellery photography; it is a light source and a reflection target, and it changes the appearance of the piece more than almost any other single choice. A faceted stone has nothing to return but the surroundings you give it.
