Photographing hallmarks, engravings and certificates legibly
A hallmark is usually less than two millimetres tall, stamped a fraction of a millimetre deep, into a curved and highly polished surface, often partly rubbed by decades of wear. Photographed the way most people photograph jewellery — front-on, with soft even light — it disappears completely, because the light fills the stamped depression and the mark returns exactly the same brightness as the metal around it. The same applies to an engraved dedication, a maker's mark, a girdle inscription and the fine print on a grading certificate. These are the images that substantiate your claims about a piece, which makes their legibility a commercial matter and their integrity an ethical one. Here is how to get them readable, and where the line sits on editing them.
Raking light: why the shadow is the subject
A stamped hallmark is a piece of relief, not a piece of ink. There is no colour difference between the mark and the metal — only a difference in height. A camera can only record it if that height difference produces a difference in brightness, and the only reliable way to produce one is a shadow.
Use a single small hard light at a very shallow angle to the surface, almost grazing it. Each depression then casts a tiny shadow on its far side and lifts a highlight on its near edge, and the mark becomes legible. The smaller and harder the source, the crisper the shadow: a bare small LED, a phone torch through a narrow slot, or a light at distance all work better than a big soft box, which is the exact opposite of what you want here.
Rotate either the light or the piece slowly while watching a live view. There is almost always one specific angle where the mark snaps into readability, and it is often not the angle you expected. Once you find it, do not move anything — shoot several frames, because you will not find that angle again quickly.
Focus on a curved inner shank
The inside of a ring shank is a curved surface, and at the magnification needed to read a 1.5mm mark the depth of field can be a few tenths of a millimetre. The mark curves away from the sensor at both ends, so a single frame focused on the middle of the mark can have both ends visibly soft.
Two workable approaches. Angle the ring so the plane of the mark is as parallel to the sensor as possible — often that means tilting the ring rather than shooting straight down into it, and shooting the mark almost edge-on to the ring's axis. Or shoot a short focus stack: three to six frames stepping focus from the near end of the mark to the far end, combined afterwards. A stack demands a genuinely rigid tripod and a remote or timer release, because any movement between frames means the stack will not align.
Stopping down is a limited answer. Depth of field increases as you close the aperture, but at high magnification diffraction starts softening the whole frame, and past a certain point you lose more detail to diffraction than you gain in depth. On a hallmark, that trade is usually a bad one — a sharp mark with soft ends beats a uniformly mushy mark.
Engravings, inscriptions and girdle text
An engraved dedication inside a band responds to the same raking light treatment, with the added complication that engraving is often shallower and finer than a stamped hallmark and may be worn thin. A slightly harder, more distant source and a very shallow angle will usually recover more than you expect.
A girdle inscription on a diamond is a different order of difficulty — laser text on the thin edge of a stone, typically requiring real magnification. If you can capture it, and it matches the number on a grading certificate you also photograph, you have produced the single most persuasive pair of images in a fine jewellery listing: evidence that the document and the physical stone correspond. Very few sellers do this.
If a mark is genuinely illegible, photograph what is there and describe it honestly as partially rubbed or unclear. Do not fill in what you think it says as though the photograph shows it. Attribution and metal claims carry consequences that vary by jurisdiction and by marketplace, so where value turns on a mark, be careful about definitive statements and take professional advice.
Photographing a certificate flat and glare-free
A grading certificate is a small, glossy, often laminated or holographic document, and it produces two problems: glare and keystone distortion. Both are solved by geometry rather than by software.
For glare, do not light the document from the front. Two soft sources at roughly forty-five degrees from either side, or a single large source well off to one side with a white card filling the other, keeps the specular reflection out of the lens. If the certificate is behind glossy lamination or in a holder, a polarising filter on the lens will cut what remains — rotate it while watching the live view until the sheen drops away.
For keystone, the camera must be square to the document: sensor plane parallel to the paper, lens centred, not shot at an angle from a chair. Shooting straight down from a tripod arm or a copy stand is the reliable method. A frame that has been digitally de-skewed afterwards is always slightly softer and, more importantly, looks corrected, which is not the impression you want on a document image.
Keep the whole certificate in one frame including its edges and any security features, and add a second frame cropped to the identifying details if the full document is not legible at listing resolution. Do not crop away the laboratory's name or the document's borders.
The strict rule on enhancement
Hallmark, inscription and certificate images occupy a different category from every other photograph in your listing. They function as evidence, and evidence that has been retouched is worthless at best and fraudulent at worst.
The permitted edits are exposure, contrast within reason, white balance, straightening a frame that is genuinely square in the original, and sharpening at a level that does not create detail. Nothing else. Do not clone, do not paint in a missing part of a stamp, do not darken a partial mark to make it read as complete, do not reconstruct a worn digit, do not composite two frames of a mark except as a genuine focus stack of the same fixed view.
The reasoning is simple: every one of those edits produces an image asserting something the object does not support. A buyer, a marketplace or a court looking at a reconstructed hallmark is looking at a claim you manufactured. If the mark cannot be read, say it cannot be read.
The same discipline applies to any tool you use downstream. Presenting the frames in a listing
Put the mark and certificate frames in the gallery, not in a link or an attachment, and caption each one with what it shows: which mark, where on the piece it is located, and your reading of it. A hallmark photograph without a caption explaining where it sits on the piece is much less useful than it looks.
Where a piece carries several marks — a standard mark, an assay office mark, a date letter, a sponsor's mark — shoot them in one frame if they sit together and are legible at that scale, and in separate frames if not. A buyer trying to date a piece will thank you for the separate frames.
Be careful with the language around certificates. A photograph proves that you hold a document and that a stone bears an inscription; it does not itself demonstrate a colour grade, a clarity grade or a carat weight. Say what the certificate states and attribute it to the laboratory, rather than presenting an image as though it were proof of grade.
