What to do with your aerial farm photos after the flight
Aerial stills of a farm are almost always disappointing on the screen compared to how the flight felt. The greens go pale and yellowish, the whole frame sits behind a grey veil of atmospheric haze, boundaries that were obvious from the air become indistinguishable, and the parcel you were trying to show reads as an anonymous patchwork. None of that means the flight was wasted. Most of it is fixable in selection, cropping and a small number of specific corrections. This is about what to do with the files you already have, not about how or when to fly.
Cull first, and cull on the right criteria
A flight produces far more frames than are worth keeping, and the instinct is to keep the prettiest. For a farm or a land parcel that is the wrong filter. The question is whether the frame answers something a viewer needs to know: where the boundary runs, how the buildings sit relative to each other, how you get in and out, where the water is, how the ground lies.
Sort into four functional groups and keep the best two or three of each rather than twenty variations of the nicest angle. A hazy but informative frame that shows the whole parcel with its boundaries legible is worth more than a beautiful low-angle shot of one corner.
Delete anything soft. Aerial frames taken while moving are frequently slightly unsharp, and it will not survive being enlarged for a listing or a print. Zoom in to the buildings at full size before you decide a frame is a keeper; a hedge line looks fine at thumbnail size and turns to mush at full resolution.
- Boundary and extent: the whole parcel with its edges readable, ideally with a road or landmark for orientation
- Buildings and yard: the steading, the layout, roof condition, hardstanding, how the buildings relate to each other
- Access: the road frontage, the track in, gateways, internal access between fields
- Water and ground: ponds, ditches, watercourses, visible wet ground, contour and slope
Straighten and crop until the parcel is legible
The most valuable edit on an aerial is not a colour adjustment, it is a crop. A frame with a third of it taken up by a neighbour's land, or with the subject sitting off in one corner, forces the viewer to work out what they are meant to be looking at. Crop so the parcel occupies most of the frame with just enough context around it to orient someone.
Straighten it, and pick a consistent convention. On a near-vertical frame that usually means north up, or the road along the bottom edge, applied to every frame in the set so people can hold one image against the next. On an oblique, straighten to the horizon. Nothing signals amateur work faster than a set of aerials each at a slightly different rotation.
Cropping also fixes a common aerial problem: too much empty sky in an oblique. Sky above the horizon in a land photo is rarely doing work. Trim it down to a band unless the sky itself is genuinely good, and give the extra frame to the ground.
Cutting haze without turning the picture to soot
Atmospheric haze is the grey layer between the camera and the ground. It lifts the darkest parts of the image so nothing is properly black, drops overall contrast, and mutes colour. Aerials shot at any height in summer air almost always have it, and it is the main reason a flight looks better than its files.
The correction is a contrast recovery: pull the black point down so the darkest hedge shadows read as dark again, and restore some colour saturation that the haze washed out. Every editing tool has some version of a dehaze control, and the mistake everyone makes is going too far. Overcooked dehaze produces black tree lines, oversaturated crop colour, unnatural halos around building edges and a sky that goes almost navy.
Judge it against something you know. Look at a building roof, a concrete pad or a road surface in the frame. When those read as their real colours and the shadows have depth without becoming voids, stop. The washed-out green problem
Midday aerials give grass and crop a pale, slightly yellow, low-contrast green that looks nothing like standing in the field. Partly that is haze. Partly it is that overhead sun flattens the texture of a sward, removing the shadow between plants that gives the eye something to read. And partly it is that camera processing tends to push green towards yellow.
You can correct the cast back towards a true green and recover some of the contrast between crop and bare ground, which is genuinely worth doing because it makes field boundaries and crop differences legible again. What you cannot honestly do is decide what colour the field should be. A drought-stressed pasture in August is a brown-green field, and returning it to spring green is a straightforward misrepresentation, particularly on a land sale where the whole point of the image is the state of the ground.
The working test: would someone standing in that field on that day recognise the colour? If yes, the correction is honest. If the photo shows a field they would not recognise, you have gone from correcting a camera to inventing a condition. On a marketing image that is a credibility problem; on a sale listing it is much more serious than that.
Add a ground-level companion frame
The chronic weakness of aerial imagery is scale. From above, a forty-acre block and a four-acre block look the same, a hedge and a treeline look the same, and a person cannot tell whether the track is a lane or a farm road. Viewers know this instinctively and it makes them uneasy, even if they cannot say why.
The fix is to pair every aerial with a ground shot of the same place. One frame from the gateway looking across the field the aerial shows. One from the yard entrance. One from the road frontage looking in. Two seconds standing on the ground gives the viewer the reference the aerial cannot.
Publish them as pairs, in that order, with a line saying which is which. It also quietly demonstrates that the aerial is not doing something flattering that the ground view would contradict, which is worth more on a land listing than any amount of polish.
Practical editing notes and one limit worth knowing
Work from the original file rather than a copy that has already been compressed for a message app. A frame sent by WhatsApp and edited afterwards will fall apart when you push contrast into it. Pull the files off the drone or the camera card directly.
Keep the edited set consistent. If you cut haze on one frame and not the next, a viewer flipping between them sees a set that does not describe one place. Decide on the treatment on your best frame, then apply the same approach to the rest.

Norms and rules differ by country and by the type of sale, and property and land marketing in particular can carry specific advertising requirements.
