Photographing a flight so the colours and the order make sense
A flight is the most information-dense thing you sell and the hardest thing on the menu to photograph. Five glasses in a row on a wooden paddle should show a customer a spread of styles, a progression of colour and a reason to order the sampler instead of a pint. What the phone usually returns is a murky brown row where the pilsner and the pale ale are indistinguishable, the stout is a black hole, the glasses at the back are hidden behind the ones at the front, and the whole thing has a warm orange cast picked up from the timber. Every one of those is a lighting and angle problem, and none of them need equipment you do not already have behind the bar.
Light comes through the beer or the shot is dead
Beer colour is transmitted, not reflected. If light passes through the glass and then into the camera, you see the actual colour — straw, gold, amber, ruby, brown. If your light is behind the camera, you see a reflection off the front of the glass and a dark shape behind it, which is why bar-lit flight photos are uniformly brown.
Put a soft light source behind the paddle. A window with a thin curtain is ideal. A lamp bounced off a white wall works. Even a white napkin taped behind the flight and lit from the side gives you something. What you want is even brightness across the whole row, so the glass at the end is not visibly dimmer than the one in the middle.
For very dark beers, add a raking light from behind and to one side. A stout lit straight through reads as black; lit from behind at an angle, the thinner liquid near the glass wall shows its ruby or deep brown edge, which is the only place its colour is visible at all. Kill the warm cast from the paddle

Two practical fixes. Angle so every glass is visible
Shot from standing height, a row of glasses becomes five circles of foam and no beer. Shot from directly level, the front glass covers the one behind it. The working angle is low three-quarter: camera at roughly the height of the middle of the glass, positioned off to one side so the row runs diagonally across the frame rather than straight at the camera.
That angle does two things at once. It shows the body of every glass, and it lets the row recede so the viewer reads it as a sequence rather than a wall. Stagger the glasses very slightly if the paddle allows, so each one has clear space behind it.
Back up and shoot from further away than feels natural. A phone's wide lens at close range bulges the nearest glass and shrinks the far one, so a flight of five ends up looking like a flight of one large and four small. Distance plus a tighter crop keeps the glasses the same apparent size, which matters because a customer is reading relative fill and pour size.
Fill levels, order and the tasting card
Uneven fills are the fastest way to make a flight look careless, and they also change apparent colour, since a deeper column of liquid reads darker. Pour to the same level in every glass, check by eye down the row before shooting, and top up the low one rather than accepting it.
Order the glasses deliberately, lightest to darkest or in the actual serving order, and be consistent about it across every flight photo you take. A customer who sees the same left-to-right progression each time learns to read it. A row in random order looks like a mistake even if it is the order you serve.
If the flight comes with a tasting card, numbered clips or names burned into the paddle, get them legible. That usually means angling so the text faces the camera rather than the guest, and keeping the text within the depth of field. Five heads do not stay right for long, and they do not fall at the same rate. Pour last-to-first in reverse of how fast they collapse, or pour all five and shoot within the first minute rather than styling for three.
Compose and focus with the glasses in place empty, or with water, before you pour. That way the pour happens into a frame that is already set and you spend the whole window shooting instead of adjusting. Shoot a burst and pick afterwards.
Accept that flights need a second attempt more often than most product shots. Have the beer to do it. Trying to rescue a flat, uneven row afterwards is not something editing can do, since foam that has collapsed is simply not in the photograph.
Finishing without changing the beer
The edit on a flight photo should be small: neutralise the colour cast from the room and the paddle, even out the exposure so the far end of the row is not darker than the near end, clean the surface behind, and straighten the crop. That is a set of changes that makes the photo describe the flight more accurately than the raw frame did.
